BLOG: WHAT DO YOU THINK?
We all know the term “carbon footprint.” Unfortunately, there is no similar measure for the impact of nitrogen on the environment, but nitrogen deserves its own ignominious “footprint.” Its impact is serious—toxic algal blooms, suffocated fish, tainted drinking water, and crashing aquatic ecosystems—all direct consequences of excessive use of nitrogen in agriculture. By quantifying the impact, we can draw attention to this crisis, and motivate change to generate a smaller nitrogen footprint.
