How We're Helping

My name is Ella and I am a Freshman at Yale University, but started this website while a student at Skaneateles High School in the Finger Lakes Region of New York. Living in this area has exposed me to a common event - algal blooms that cause dead zones in Skaneateles Lake. Because agriculture is prevalent here, so is eutrophication - nutrients in a body of water causing the dense growth of plant life, leading to the death of animal life due to a lack of oxygen.

I am passionate about promoting my view that nitrogen is as detrimental to the environment as carbon, and concerned that nitrogen has an equally toxic effect on aquatic environments as carbon does on the atmosphere. I hope to build awareness so consumers and farmers start to change their behavior to minimize the effects on our waters.

Get Involved

Spread the word! If you are a scientist, professor, blogger, teacher, student, parent, anybody, please help me to make "Nitrogen Footprint" a real measure so we can start to change our thinking and create limits on nitrogen-based fertilizer!

Thank You
